Memo.id rules?

Hello, I’m new to EOS. I can’t find anything about the rules about memo.id in transactions. For personal wallets can you write messages in the memo.id? I bought EOS on Changelly and wrote a message in it but they said it didn’t look correct. (It was just a short personal message for someone who recently passed away). This should go through correct ? If not does anyone know the rules?
